- WinLIRC. The inspiration to this project. But it does not work with USB devices. This is the option if you are planning to build a serial port based device.
- Lirc. LIRC will work with USB devices. but it is intended for Linux platforms.
- USB IR Boy. Anothor USB IR device. This one only works with LIRC.
- Girder. Excellent utility which enables any Windows application to be controlled using a remote control. A bit hard to configure.

- Media Portal. Very simillar to the previous ones, but open source.
